Polybutylene Terephthalate, PBT for short, is a thermoplastic polyester resin derived from copolymerization of 1.4-butanediol and terepthalic acid (PTA). Fiber glass can be added in the later stage of production to strengthen the product. Other additives can also be added to give PBT resins various electrical or mechanical advantages or to improve other attributes, such as fire retardation. It is high performance engineering plastic with the widest uses.
Table 1: Common PBT Compounding Ingredients & Their Functions
| Additive | Function | Typical Loading (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Glass Fiber | Enhances strength & stiffness | 10–40% |
| Flame Retardants | Improves fire resistance (e.g., brominated compounds) | 5–20% |
| Impact Modifiers | Increases toughness (e.g., elastomers) | 5–15% |
| Lubricants | Improves mold release & flow | 0.1–1% |
| UV Stabilizers | Prevents degradation from sunlight | 0.5–2% |
Table 2: Key Properties of Compounded PBT
| Property | Standard PBT | Glass-Filled PBT | Flame-Retardant PBT |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tensile Strength (MPa) | 50–60 | 120–160 | 70–100 |
| Melting Point (°C) | 220–230 | 220–230 | 220–230 |
| HDT @ 1.82 MPa (°C) | 60–80 | 200–220 | 70–100 |
| UL94 Flame Rating | HB | HB/V-2 | V-0 |
Table 3: Comparison with Other Engineering Plastics
| Resin Type | Advantages | Disadvantages |
|---|---|---|
| PBT | Fast molding, good chemical resistance | Lower impact strength vs. nylon |
| Nylon (PA6/PA66) | Higher toughness, wear resistance | Absorbs moisture, dimensional instability |
| PET | Higher strength, better clarity | Slower crystallization, harder to process |
Table 4: Major Applications of Compounded PBT
| Industry | Application | Key Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Automotive | Connectors, sensors, housings | Heat resistance, dimensional stability |
| Electrical/Electronics | Circuit breakers, switches | Flame retardancy, insulation |
| Consumer Goods | Power tool housings, appliance parts | Durability, creep resistance |
PBT resins are widely used in compounding due to their excellent mechanical properties, electrical insulation, and chemical resistance. Glass fiber reinforcement enhances strength, while flame retardants make them suitable for electrical applications. Compared to nylon and PET, PBT offers faster processing and better dimensional stability, making it a preferred choice in automotive and electronics industries.
